Pakistan v Australia at Lord's

1st test

July 2010

Day 3, Thursday July 15th, 2010

Australia 100-4 in their second innings,  after having scored 252 (Katich 80, M.Amir 4-72) in their first innings and Pakistan were 148 all out

Australia stretched their lead to 439 when they were bowled out for 334 just before tea.  Night-watchman Johnson (30) had initially frustrated the Pakistan bowlers along with Paine (47) and Hilfenhaus's 56* rubbed salt into the wounds.  Umar Gul with 4-61 was the pick of Pakistan's bowlers, mainly thanks to a spirited spell the previous evening.

Pakistan's response to the record-breaking target was on course until Farhat was caught by Watson off Smith at 50, although Butt (58* at the close) and Azhar Ali pressed on regardless.

Close: Pakistan 114-1 needing a further 326 to win the game

AUSTRALIA won by 150 runs to lead the series

postscript: - Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi resigned after this single test having holed out 4th ball in the impossible second innings run chase;  Salman Butt was appointed captain in his stead and led his side to square the series winning by 3 wickets at Headingley after bowling Australia out for 88 in the first innings.
